The Bell Museum: YOUR state natural history museum

She began her career in science education as a classroom teacher, and she moved to museum education and leadership upon reflecting on how important museums were to her students, colleagues, and community. Before coming to Minnesota to lead the Bell, Denise served as director of education and planning at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, where she led planetarium production, exhibit and program development, community outreach, and long-range institutional planning. The Bell Museum’s $79 million award-winning new facility opened under her watch in 2018, and she proudly leads a talented team of scientists, educators, and designers committed to inspiring awe, curiosity, and understanding of the natural world. |

She has spent over 15 years working in the nonprofit industry and has spent countless hours debating the superiority of the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice versus the 2005 theatrical release. Monique moved to the Twin Cities from Springfield, MO in 2013 and joined CAPI as their Operations Coordinator. In 2015, she began working in the President’s Office at Bethel University where she earned her master’s in Strategic Leadership in 2018. Monique happily rejoined CAPI in January of 2020. Outside of work, she is a member of Kith and Kin Chorus, a rock and roll choir in the Twin Cities, and she volunteers as a Big Sister for Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities. |

Upon returning to Minnesota, Matthew was looking for a change that would still give him the satisfaction of serving and helping others. In the few short years of being with Tonka Financial Services, he has built a large book of healthcare & Medicare business, while being fully registered as an Investment Advisor Representative and is well versed in the Wealth Management Asset Allocation Strategies that have made Tonka Financial Services a successful financial firm. Highway 55 Clean-Up The Golden Valley Rotary Club is in its 25th year of caring for our stretch of Highway 55; our work continues on Tuesday, April 27! Community members are welcome to join us in this fun and easy project. Meet at the NE Corner of Hwy 55 and Winnetka Ave. 1. We encourage everyone to wear masks upon arrival. The only portion of highway clean up where people tend to congregate is when receiving their vest and pick up instructions, and that is usually a group of 10 or less. After that, people are usually split into pairs to clean up different sections of the highway, where maintaining social distancing is pretty straightforward. |

Waste Reduction and Recycling

VIRTUAL MEETING Join Zoom Meeting Mallory Anderson works within Hennepin County's waste reduction and recycling unit working to meet a 75% recycling goal by 2030. Mallory works on policy and annual reporting for the county's waste reduction and recycling team. She leads the implementation of Hennepin County's Recycling Requirement Ordinance #13. She has supported the business recycling team as a liaison to businesses trying to reduce waste and increase how much they recycled. VIRTUAL MEETING Join Zoom Meeting Martha Truax has been part of the Advancement team at Augsburg University since 2007, serving in a variety of roles to raise support from alumni, parents, and friends of the University. In her current role, she leads fundraising and engagement efforts for the StepUP collegiate recovery program, including the annual StepUP Gala. She is passionate about raising awareness about the disease of addiction and the transformative power of recovery. Martha earned a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Humanities, Media and Cultural Studies from Macalester College and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Augsburg University. Renee Most joined Augsburg University’s StepUP Program for students in recovery from substance abuse as its new director in fall 2019, bringing her own experience as an alumna of StepUP and her 15 plus years of clinical work in the field of addiction related issues. Renee holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Catherine’s University, is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), and earned a master’s degree in addiction studies from Hazelden Graduate School. |

Dr. Mary Meland is a graduate of Carleton College and the U of Minnesota School of Medicine. She is retired after practicing pediatrics for 40 years, first at HealthPartners in Bloomington and finally at South Lake Pediatrics in Maple Grove. In addition to general pediatrics, Dr. Meland has a special interest in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and in early childhood education. She has been active in urging the MN Legislature to consider the needs of our youngest citizens. Dr. Meland and her husband have three children and five grandchildren, all of whom live in Minneapolis. Ada Alden holds an M.A. and Ed.D. from the University of Minnesota. She worked for 25 years as the Director of Family Educational Services for the Eden Prairie Schools and has served as an adjunct professor and department chair in Child and Family Studies at St. Cloud State University. Ada taught classes at the University of Minnesota and presently is a University of Minnesota Supervisor assisting graduate students seeking to complete the parent educator licensure. Ada has worked in the early childhood field for over 40 years and has trained early childhood professionals and parents throughout the midwest. She started four early childhood/family education programs in Minnesota, addressing the needs, concerns, and challenges of families with young children. |

Urban Agriculture - Growing Food and Security on Our Own Turf

Ethan Neal is a 7th generation farmer and laborer born in Iowa and raised in Northfield, Minnesota. Despite being surrounded by agriculture throughout his life, it wasn’t until he started working with Pillsbury United that he grew food for community. Since that first growing season in 2011, connecting people to food, soil, and their farmers has been his life’s work. Ethan has worked in a variety of roles with Pillsbury United – from working as a part time job coach for adults with special needs, to coordinating a food shelf, to stewarding Pillsbury’s mission to grow food security as the Director of Food Systems. Through food shelves, community meal programs, outdoor and hydroponic farms, Ethan is dedicated to providing families with choice and access, feeding PUC’s goal of a food system nurtured by and for the community. Ethan studied at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and earned a Certified Professional Project Management certificate from the University of St. Thomas. He is a member of the Twin Cities Leadership Cohort of 2021, a charter member of the Twin Cities Rotary Ecoclub, and a former Rotary Youth Exchange Student and program ambassador. Golden Valley Community Foundation

Dean Penk is a founding member and current chairperson of the Golden Valley Community Foundation, established in 2011. Until 2016, his professional work life was as a sales person and manager of various entities engaged in food packaging for products distributed throughout the world. In 1999-2000 he was a volunteer to USAID as a business consultant to startup food manufacturing businesses in the Republic of Armenia. While an undergrad student at U of MN - Morris, Dean led liberal arts programming teams for student activities. Dean was a member of the UM-Morris Alumni Board and is a past vice president. He served on Golden Valley’s Brookview’s Golf Improvement Committee in the 1990s, the Golden Valley Envision Connection Project Board of Directors til 2012, and the Brookview Community Center Task Force in 2016. Dean’s volunteer spirit and his support of community continues as evidenced by his leadership as board chair and acting executive director of the Foundation since 2011. A resident of Golden Valley since 1986, his wife Julie and he have raised multiple 4-legged kids. In his personal life, Dean is engaged in multiple activities including golf, gardening, landscaping, home design and renovation, travel, and volunteering for the Golden Valley Market in the Valley farmers market. |

Tim Connelly is a member of the Lake Minnetonka-Excelsior (Morning) Rotary Club and a newly-minted ShelterBox Ambassador for District 5950. In his role as ShelterBox Ambassador, Tim travels the highways and byways of our district sharing the ShelterBox story with Rotary Clubs, churches, schools, and community groups. ShelterBox is the official, and only, project partner of Rotary International in disaster relief. They work to improve the physical and psychological well-being of families displaced by natural disaster and conflict. Warmth and dignity is offered to families left desperate and homeless. Through the provision of tented shelter and other lifesaving aid, families get back on their feet and regain a feeling of safety and security. |

Robyn is passionate about community involvement and volunteerism, actively and enthusiastically giving her time and talents to many nonprofit organizations. Robyn has over 20 years of experience as a global leader at Medtronic, an international healthcare solutions company. She very effectively built relationships across geographies with both external and internal partners while leading large multi-cultural teams and programs. Her positive leadership style with demonstrated success in people management, project management and strategic planning drove a culture of continuous improvement. She is skilled in cultural agility and accepted assignments in the Netherlands, Japan, and in India where she was a Global Innovation Fellow. Robyn also served as a long-time Philanthropy Liaison, promoting employee volunteerism and giving programs, and selecting community Health Access Grant recipients focused on expanding access to underserved populations. |

She was the Director of Rehabilitation with Children’s Hospitals of Minnesota. She developed comprehensive solutions to combine Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses into one system. Prior to Children’s Hospital, she was the Director of Outreach Services for Camelia Rose Care Center in Coon Rapids, MN. |

In his first book, "One Way - Short Stories About Left Turns," Dorsey shares about the consequences of a life that is full of left turns. Dorsey is passionate about helping kids examine their lives and see the destructive choices they may be making. Perpich Arts High School

Conn McCartan’s educational career spans nearly 40 years. During that time, he has been a science teacher, a coach, a student council advisor, a dean of students, an assistant principal, and a principal. Conn has been the Perpich Arts High School Principal since August, 2019. Prior to Perpich, he served as high school principal at Eden Prairie (his alma mater), Maple Grove, and Blaine. While at Eden Prairie, Conn led them through a time of increased academic achievement (as measured by AP performance, National Merit Scholars, and ACT performance), college readiness (producing the highest percentage of graduates enrolling and persisting in college of any Lake Conference School), and co-curricular success (as measured by participation and state/national acclaim). Conn holds a B.S. in Natural Sciences from St. John’s University and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas. |

Dr. Timothy Klesk is a 2014 graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University where he received his Doctorate of Chiropractic. Prior to graduating from Northwestern, he attended the University of North Dakota, earning his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. Tim was raised in Champlin, MN and currently resides in Northeast Minneapolis with his wife, Dr. Madeline Klesk, who is also a chiropractor, along with their dog, Ava. He enjoys staying active, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family. He strives to give back to the profession and community as an active member of many local and national organizations. Tim is a former Golden Valley Rotarian. He was a member of the Club from 2015-2017.

Healthy Snacks for PRISM Service Project

Rotary members will gather for a hands-on service project. We'll be packing bags with healthy snacks for kids at PRISM. Golden Valley Rotary received a District 5950 grant for the project. We plan to fill 300 bags at the September 28th meeting and 300 more bags at the October 5th meeting. Each bag will contain a 100% juice drink, peaches, applesauce, nut bars, granola bars, turkey sticks, cheese sticks, and chocolate covered raisins. PRISM will distribute the bags to children of their participants. |
