Esperienza: Celebrating and Preserving the Italian Culture
Nov 02, 2021
Meeting location: PRISM
Anna Bonavita is a former scientist with a passion for culture, cuisine, and environment. In 2018, Bonavita read a New York Times article about the plight of many small towns and villages in Italy that are suffering from a devastating population loss due to changing times. With her own history and love of Italy, Anna decided to do something about it, beginning with the region she knew best. From this, Esperienza was born. The non- profit small group tour company researches, educates, and provides authentic, curated experiences in Italian villages that are selected for their exquisite beauty, cultural wealth, and rapidly declining population. Esperienza brings visitors to the historic town of Pennabilli and the Emilia-Romagna region where they immerse themselves in the local community and learn about the language, arts, culture, and cuisine. Bonavita is also the founder and former president of the Italian Cultural Center as well as the Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Born in a small village in Bulgaria, but swept away by the waves of globalization, Anna claims several countries as the source of her cultural identity. She currently resides in Minneapolis, MN. |

***Highway 55 Clean-Up postponed one week due to weather*** Highway 55 Clean-Up Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0e4aafae23a3fb6-highway3 The Golden Valley Rotary Club is in its 25th year of caring for our stretch of Highway 55; our work continues on Thursday, November 4! Community members are welcome to join us in this fun and easy project. Meet at the NE Corner of Hwy 55 and Winnetka Ave. 1. We encourage everyone to wear masks upon arrival. The only portion of highway clean up where people tend to congregate is when receiving their vest and pick up instructions, and that is usually a group of 10 or less. After that, people are usually split into pairs to clean up different sections of the highway, where maintaining social distancing is pretty straightforward. |

The 2021-2022 Rotary Year
Dec 07, 2021
A member of the Monticello Rotary Club since 1994, Marianna Khauv has long been putting service above self. Marianna has served as the club's secretary, international service chair, and president. Additionally, she served as a member of the District Grant Committee from 2013-2019 and as Rotary District 5950 Area 13 assistant governor from 2016 to 2019. Marianna was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States with her parents at age thirteen. She did not speak English and was amazed by the new culture and environment, especially snow and below zero temperatures! Marianna and her husband, Onn, have called Monticello home since 1991. Not only have they raised their three daughters, Malinda, Amanda, and Olivia, in Monticello, they have also been business owners in the community. With the success of their restaurant and hotel businesses, they soon started finding ways to volunteer to give back to their growing and supportive community. Marianna's theme as the chair of Monticello Chamber of Commerce in 1999 was “U” and “I” working in “Unity” for a better “CommUnIty.” This has also been Marianna’s approach to Rotary, both locally and globally. Together, with the help from the Rotary Clubs of Alexandria, Buffalo, St. Michael & Albertville, and Monticello, Marianna was able to build a total of three libraries for schools in rural villages of Cambodia where there is no running water or electricity. To Marianna, this is a true testimony of the power and potential of people working together, of Rotary! |

The History of the Golden Valley Rotary Club
Dec 14, 2021
Don Anderson has called Golden Valley his home for most of his life. In 1973, he was a member of the Provisional Rotary Club of Golden Valley and one of the incorporators of the club. He is a past president who maintained a 46-year perfect attendance record. Anderson was named the Golden Valley Rotary Club Rotarian of the Year in 2000 and Golden Valley Rotary Club Citizen of the Year in 2011. After retirement from a career in real estate in 1989, Don joined the Golden Valley Historical Society and was elected the volunteer secretary of the organization, an office which he continued to hold 30 years later. He played a major role in saving the Golden Valley Historical Society from folding. He was instrumental in the Society acquiring the oldest church in the city on July 1, 1997 and renovating the structure with the goal of creating a Golden Valley museum in the lower level. Wedding revenue has provided the organization some of the means to renovate, as well as pay the bills. So far he has signed up over 200 weddings which have taken place and has a reservation waiting list of more this year and into 2022. After 30 years with the Golden Valley Historical Society, Don Anderson has the reputation of being “Mr. Golden Valley Historian”. Anderson was active on a committee in promoting the partnership of the Historical Society and the Golden Valley Rotary Club in hiring a professional videographer in 2003 to create a VHS tape history of the City of Golden Valley. This was to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Golden Valley Rotary Club. The “Celebrate Golden Valley” videotape was entered in a video contest in Galveston, Texas in 2004, and won first place over 4,000 entries. Envision Golden Valley blossomed into a citizen-led community initiative in 2002, when the City of Golden Valley partnered with the Golden Valley Rotary to develop an inclusive and accessible visioning process. Don was on the steering committee and worked to have sub-committees appointed in the several event categories. The Envision project brought together citizens to think about Golden Valley 20 years down the road. Over 600 Golden Valley citizens shared over 1,000 ideas for the future of the City. The ideas created sparked the creation of a follow-up group called the Bridge. This group continues today to review and implement the ideas from the Envision project. One of the ideas was to organize volunteers who, with the cooperation of the Minnesota Highway Department, would plant lilacs and other plants along Highway 55 and Highway 100 in Golden Valley. Don’s wife, Mary Anderson, has also been active in the community. She was a long time member of the Golden Valley League of Women Voters, served on the Golden Valley Planning Commission, served two terms on the Golden Valley City Council, was Mayor of the City of Golden Valley for six and a half terms, and was Chair of the Metropolitan Council. |

A lifelong resident of Minneapolis, Faye graduated from the College of St Catherine (now St. Catherine University) with a BA in Sociology. She worked for seven years with Hennepin County Court Services at Hennepin County Juvenile Center, a maximum security facility for detained youth. Although her sales activities have been mainly in the metro and suburbs, she has sold property from Stillwater to Delano and from Ham Lake to Lonsdale. Faye is grateful that she never wakes up in the morning thinking “I hate my job and can’t wait to retire” and is pleased that she has friends who have become clients and clients who have become friends. |
